I made the mistake of overdressing at the start due to the cold. I should have known better, but when the lead group got to a T in the road marked County Rd. 21, instead of Flower Valley Road, like the tulip notes stated, I took the chance of shedding a layer. By the time I got going again, the leaders were off. I followed their tracks... The surface went from slushy snow, to gravel/dirt roads. What looked like your average wind-swept snow-covered dirt road was actually had a gnarly glazed coating of ice. WIth each pedal stroke, the potential for slip-n-slide disaster was imminent.

Right before the first checkpoint, as in right beyond this damn train, I get caught up by said train. Just like the 2006 Paris-Roubaix. And how fitting, as we were in for some true Spring Classics weather...

After refilling bottles and downing a double-shot espresso, at the Lake City Kwik-Trip, I was off. Rolling into Millville, home of the Spring Creek Moto track, it was all I could do to not stop at the Stumble Inn for a hamburger. Then it was straight up good ol' County 72. This is a steep road, and kid on a Matt Chester single speed was killing it on the climb. I rode with him briefly, but by this point he was just steadily pulling away. While we were in the river valley it was sanguine and offered some beautiful scenery, but the climbs were not short, and the wind was murderous. I was downing the margarita Clif Shot Bloks like mad, interspersed with Espresso GU, and Gatorade Endurance.

I caught and passed a few folks, and mostly rode solo, bombing down 597th Street, a "minimum maintenance" road, all the way to the Zumbro Falls checkpoint. Here I drank some hot tea and switched into a dry wool base layer, with a wind-proof longsleeve shirt over that.

I might look like I'm going to weep, but dammit, Bobby, I just rode 105 miles in 9.5 hours, in some real gnarly weather. Hats off to the Ragnarök crüe, Jake, Issac, & Larry.

While not as much of a flogging as Mr. Burns might tell you, it certainly was our longest ride of the year. Left One On One around 10:45 a.m., arrived home at 3:42 p.m. Nearly 5 hours, with obligatory pitstops at the 318 in Excelsior, and Caribou in Wayzata on the way back. My right knee started buggin' after we had swung onto North Arm Drive on the way back in. May have been the steep climb coupled with the steep descent right after. I'm pretty happy so far, with the 45 x 17; considering going to a 46 in front. We shall see. I'd really like to do some recon down in Goodhue County before April 12. If conditions are right, I might even ride the Merckx. If it's soupy sales, then the Cross-Check will get the nod, due to larger skins. Meanwhile, thanks to Burns for another great day in the saddle. C-u-next Tuesday?

Tuesday Training Rides

Got out for another ride yesterday. The pave leading up from the Stone Arch Bridge gives a good teeth-chattering ride. Rolled through the University to East River Road to the Ford Parkway, crossed the river back to West River Road to the Greenway.

Rolled the Greenway out to Hopkins where it turns to gravel, then up Baker Road to the Minnetonka LRT.

The Minnetonka LRT connects to the north leg of the Cedar Lake Trail. All in all, a good day for a 3 hour fixed-gear slog.

Slick 50 Recon: Drop the Hammer...

Saturday brought sunshine and hangovers, and the intense need to put some miles in. 49x15 Clayton and I headed out on the familiar western Hopkins trail, bootlegging up to the Minnetonka LRT line for some easy rolling. At Cty. Rd 19 it's du nord to Cty. Rd 15 and east back to town via Lake Minnetonka and Wayzata. A nice 3-hour tour.

No real aggressive moves for sprint signs, etc. –it's a bit early for those shenanigans– but I did, in fact, Drop the Hammer. Shortly after turning onto 15, I scored a sweet road trophy, lying on the shoulder. A fiberglass-handled claw hammer. Below, you can see me "dropping the hammer." Trevor never knew what hit him...(I'm killing myself over here! Thanks, I'll be here all weekend...)

Lastly, a hearty FUCK YOU to the guy driving the TK Lawnscaping truck out near Minnetonka. Dude, your engine-revving prowess is certainly unmatched in all of Dickdom. At $3 a gallon, you probably burned through $22 of pure rage right there. Nice work.
